KOG doet oproep voor deelcollectief

Following the Training & Education symposium, KOG issues call for partial collective!

Last Friday, the symposium took place:

Training & Education

We all started somewhere: everyone doing, wanting to do, or considering doing qualitative research sought education and training at some point. The KOG symposium brought together people seeking training and offering training. How fruitful to have this discussion with faculty, clinical researchers, clinicians AND students!

Contributions from lecturers Manna Alma (UMCG) and Femke Truijens (EUR), both prodded in the mission to get qualitative research into training, showed that both hands are short in converting the growing interest into quality education. Experiences from both speakers sparked a fruitful discussion in which participants recognized and how-to and how-not-to were exchanged as a matter of course, empowered by an enthusiastic mission to get qualitative research appropriately integrated into curricula (from BA to KP training).

What stumbling blocks do we encounter in qualitative research education?

  • Assessment forms based on quantitative research
  • Having to create data analysis plans at the beginning of training, which leaves no room for qualitative learning and development
  • “Qualitative research as a basis for learning & improvement” should leave room for actual learning, not a task to be ticked off.
    Reflection is key!
  • The observation that summative testing and hyper-focus on an end product does not fit well with qualitative methods teaching.
  • …. But also that there is so much experience and expertise with process-oriented assessment, flipped classroom, chatgpt-free peer-based skills education
  • The observation that clinically trained people are not automatically good interviewers, and interview training is often perceived as enriching clinical curiosity in conversation

We are happy to continue this whirlwind meeting concretely in a sub-collective Schooling & Education.

Call!!!

We enjoy looking at assessment forms, assessment and evaluation tools together, to see how qualitative research would come into its own herein. Would you like to provide us with such templates and forms? Gladly! We collect them from a variety of training contexts (university, college, PPO, RINO), in order to formulate concrete advice on how forms and assessment are more compatible with qualitative research.
